Located in Kagoshima City, "Sengan-en Garden" is a highly prestigious daimyo (feudal lord) garden representing Japan, constructed in 1658 by Mitsuhisa, the 19th head of the Shimadzu clan, and registered as a World Cultural Heritage site. The greatest highlight of this vast garden, spanning approximately 15,000 tsubo (50,000 square meters), is its dynamic structural beauty utilizing the shakkei (borrowed scenery) technique—incorporating the majestic "Kinko Bay" before it as a pond and the towering "Sakurajima" as a miniature mountain, completely overwhelming international visitors. The site is packed with attractions, including tours of the beautiful palace where samurai and princesses of the Edo period once resided, visits to traditional Satsuma Kiriko glass workshops, and local delicacies such as Jambo mochi. It is an premier historical resort where Japan's excellent traditional aesthetic sense and the wild natural energy of a volcano beautifully harmonize.
