The garden of Joeiji Temple in Yamaguchi City is a nationally designated scenic spot and historic site, said to have been built by the master painter of the Muromachi period, Sesshu. Originally created as a garden for the Ouchi clan's villa, it features a sturdy yet deep spatial composition that skillfully incorporates the background mountains as borrowed landscape. Each arrangement of stones feels the strength unique to Sesshu, showing various expressions depending on the angle. The quiet time spent sitting on the porch of the main hall and gazing at the garden is a meditative experience that makes you completely forget daily life. It is a luxurious spot where you can slowly experience the essence of traditional Japanese "Zen" aesthetics and garden art in silence.
