Iriki-Fumoto Samurai District in Satsumasendai City is a high-class, historic, and emotional area designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, which was an outer castle (castle town) built by the Satsuma Domain during the Edo period with a medieval mountain castle as its base. The greatest feature of this town is the street where heavy "stone walls" beautifully stacked with round river stones carried from the nearby Hiwaki River and beautiful hedges are arranged in an orderly manner, and just walking through it wraps you in a deep emotion as if you had slipped through time to the samurai era. Tours of beautiful thatched gates (such as the former Masuda family residence) preserved in their original state are very popular with international tourists. It is the best sacred place where you can deeply learn about the high-class aesthetic sense of the samurai, traditional defense wisdom, and the philosophy of silence.
