Standing resolutely atop a hill at the scenic Katsurahama Beach in Kochi City, the "Sakamoto Ryoma Statue" is one of Japan's largest dignified bronze statues commemorating Sakamoto Ryoma, the great hero of Kochi who moved turbulent late-Edo Japan and laid the foundations of a modern state. Wearing traditional kimono alongside western boots and inserting his hand into his breast, Ryoma gazes at the distant Pacific Ocean with an overwhelming presence, conveying deep historical romance to this day. Especially during the spring and autumn tourist seasons, a special observation deck termed "Close Approach to Ryoma" is installed right beside the statue, whose precious experience of looking down at the grand Pacific panorama and Katsurahama's beautiful coastline from Ryoma's exact eye-level is immensely popular among international tourists. It is a symbolic sacred destination of Tosa sightseeing where you can feel the hot passion and spirituality of the hero who dreamed of Japan's modernization.
