The Hagi Reverberatory Furnace in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is an industrial remain from the end of the Edo period that attempted to cast iron cannons to strengthen coastal defense. It is part of the World Heritage site "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution." As one of the very few surviving reverberatory furnaces in Japan, it is a symbol of the passion of those who desperately tried to learn Western technology and achieved modernization through their own trials and errors. The sight of the brick towers, which look like heavy chimneys, standing side by side exudes a sense of dignity. Knowing the historical background turns these old structures into spots that will be deeply engraved in your heart as evidence of the "ambition" of challengers who tried to carve out the future.
