Itsukushima Shrine, standing on Miyajima, is a uniquely creative shrine built over the sea and is registered as a World Heritage site. The beautiful vermilion buildings, incorporating the Shinden-zukuri style of the Heian period, appear as if they are floating on the water when the tide is high. The contrast between the deep green of Mt. Misen in the background, the blue sea, and the vermilion shrine is a quintessential Japanese view. Its most famous feature is the massive Grand Torii Gate standing in the sea; at low tide, you can walk out to it, and at high tide, you can admire its majestic presence from the shrine or a boat. With over 1,400 years of history, it is a sanctuary symbolizing the Japanese spiritual culture of worshipping nature itself.
