Located atop Mt. Otokoyama in Yawata City, "Iwashimizu Hachimangu" is one of Japan's three major Hachimangu shrines, and the main hall is designated as a National Treasure. The episode of Edison using bamboo from here for the filament of his light bulb is world-famous, and a monument stands within the grounds. The journey up via cable car from the foot and the view from the summit are magnificent, offering a panoramic view as far as Kyoto City. The contrast between the vermilion shrine buildings and the surrounding greenery is beautiful, and it still attracts many worshipers as a deity for warding off evil. It is a leading power spot in southern Kyoto where history, science, and nature merge.
