Nanzen-ji, holding the highest rank among Zen Buddhist temples, is known for its giant "Sanmon" gate and the red-brick arched Suirokaku aqueduct, famous as a filming location. From atop the Sanmon, you can overlook Kyoto City, a magnificent view also known for the legend of Ishikawa Goemon. The Hojo garden (dry landscape) is a masterpiece expressing the Zen spirit, and just sitting and looking at it settles the mind. The Suirokaku, built in the Meiji era, has a unique beauty of Japanese-Western fusion and is a great photo spot. With deep silence and heavy history drifting through the vast grounds, it is an area where you can fully enjoy both Kyoto-style high status and rich, walkable nature.
