Quietly spreading along the southern part of the Shimabara Peninsula overlooking the beautiful Ariake Sea, the "Hara Castle Ruins" form a globally significant historical sanctuary registered as a World Cultural Heritage component of the "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki and Amakusa Region." Serving as the stage for the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion in 1637, the profound history and sorrow where about 37,000 believers led by Amakusa Shiro fought to the very end for their conviction and freedom remain engraved here. Today, it has become a peaceful green hill, and strolling through stone walls and cross monuments while listening to the calm sound of waves offers a deeply soul-stirring retreat to ponder human dignity and the absolute value of peace.
