Enshrined loftily within the grounds of Yasaka Shrine inside Otoyo Town, "Sugi no Osugi" (The Great Cedar of Sugi) is a mystical power spot where you can experience the earth's overwhelming breath close up, boasting an age exceeding 3,000 years and designated as a National Special Natural Monument as "Japan's absolute largest giant cedar tree." Because two giant trees—the South Cedar and North Cedar—are combined naturally at the base, it is affectionately called also the "Meoto Sugi" (Husband and Wife Cedar), and its majestic silhouette towering over about 60 meters in height with a perimeter exceeding 20 meters radiates a divine dignity, enveloping visitors in an overwhelming solemnity and deep green silence the moment they step inside. Globally famous also as a historical land where Japan's legendary singer Hibari Misora visited during her childhood to pray for success, it stands as a sacred site touching live natural life force and deep Shinto faith.
