Located southwest of Matsuyama City, Uchiko Town is a mountain town filled with historical atmosphere that built vast wealth through the manufacturing of "wax (mokuro)" and "washi (Japanese paper)" from the Edo to Meiji periods. The "Yokaichi-Gokoku Townscape," stretching for about 600 meters, is designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and its gorgeous merchant mansions with yellow plaster earthen walls and heavy grand-walled structures convey former prosperity to this day. The Taisho-period theater "Uchikaza" remains active today, allowing visitors to feel the breath of Japanese traditional performing arts up close. With substantial experiences like traditional paper making and candle making, it is a popular area where good old Japanese craft culture comfortably blends with idyllic rural landscapes.
