Jigenji Temple (commonly known as "Iwayaji Temple"), located in the rugged mountainous area of Kumakogen Town, is the 45th temple of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage and a sacred mountain sanctuary where divine spirits are said to reside. The temple grounds, hidden against the face of towering giant rocks, wrap visitors in an overwhelming solemnity and mystical silence the moment they step inside. Holy sites where natural formations and faith merge spread throughout, such as the wooden "Seriwari Zenjo" where Kobo Daishi Kukai is said to have practiced, and the Hokke Sennin Cave carved into a cliff depression. The long stairs and mountain paths heading to the main hall offer a truly spiritual journey to experience the path of ascetic training. This sacred site is exceptionally highly rated by Western travelers wishing to experience Japan's deep religious culture and the wonders of great nature firsthand.
