Once a remote island off the coast of Sakaide City, Shamijima is now connected to the mainland due to land reclamation. It is a place filled with "Manyo Romance," known as the location where the Manyoshu poet Kakinomoto no Hitomaro composed poems. Within the island, there are ruins and burial mounds from the Jomon and Yayoi periods, allowing you to feel firsthand the history of people living on this beautiful seaside since ancient times. It is also an excellent viewpoint to look up at the Great Seto Bridge close by, offering a very unique contrast between giant modern architecture and ancient history. Loved as a spring stage for the Setouchi Triennale, art pieces exhibited against the background of beautiful sandy beaches and highly transparent seas give visitors new perspectives. It is a calm strolling spot where history and modernity intersect.
