Honjima, belonging to Marugame City, is a historic island that once flourished as the base of the "Shiwaku Suigan" (Shiwaku Navy) who controlled the Seto Inland Sea. Especially the "Kasashima District" retains an old townscape from the Edo to Meiji periods and is designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Walking through labyrinthine alleys and heavy-built houses, the vitality of the sailors of the time seems to be conveyed. Additionally, it serves as a venue for the Setouchi Triennale, and its unique charm lies in the contemporary art melting into the historical scenery. Honjima, where a proud history as a maritime hub coexists with calm island time, promises a journey with depth that satisfies intellectual curiosity.
