Mima City, in northwestern Tokushima, is a town of historic atmosphere that once prospered as an indigo distribution center. The "Udatsu Townscape," designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, features heavy merchant houses with "udatsu" firewalls—symbols of wealth former merchants competed over—giving the sensation of a time-slip to the Edo period. Throughout the city, spots showing cultural depth from ancient to modern times are scattered, including Japan's oldest stone-piled tumulus and facilities designed by Tadao Ando. The beauty of the surrounding Tsurugi mountain range and the clear Anabuki River is also exceptional.
