Mima City, in northwestern Tokushima, is a town of historic atmosphere that once prospered as an indigo distribution center. The "Udatsu Townscape," designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, features heavy merchant houses with "udatsu" firewalls—symbols of wealth former merchants competed over—giving the sensation of a time-slip to the Edo period. Throughout the city, spots showing cultural depth from ancient to modern times are scattered, including Japan's oldest stone-piled tumulus and facilities designed by Tadao Ando. The beauty of the surrounding Tsurugi mountain range and the clear Anabuki River is also exceptional. It is an intellectually stimulating city where you can deeply learn traditional Japanese aesthetics and the history of prosperity through indigo dyeing experiences and historic strolls.
