Gokurakuji Temple in Naruto City is the 2nd temple of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. As its name suggests, a beautiful, meticulously maintained garden reminiscent of "Gokuraku Jodo" (Pure Land Paradise) welcomes worshippers. It is also famous for easy childbirth prayers, housing the "Anzan Daishi" statue. Especially noteworthy is the "Chonju-sugi" (Longevity Cedar), said to be over 1,200 years old. Legend says Kobo Daishi planted it, and you can feel a powerful life force from its giant trunk. Located just a short walk from the 1st temple, Ryozenji, it's a quiet and peaceful temple to stop by amidst the excitement of just starting the pilgrimage. The vermilion mountain gate and trees changing expressions seasonally are beautiful, allowing you to fully enjoy the tranquil atmosphere and traditional beauty of Japanese temples.
