This residence in Takehara City was the home of Rai Tadakiyo, the grandfather of Rai San’yo, a famous Edo-period Confucian scholar who authored "Nihon Gaishi." Located within the Townscape Preservation District, it strongly retains the lifestyle of those days when the family operated a dye shop (Konyasan). The simple but well-kept rooms and gardens, along with the spirit of valuing scholarship inherited by the Rai family, convey the traditional intellectual lifestyle of Japan. Thinking that the spirit cultivated here had a major influence on later Japanese historical thought gives the place a weight beyond a simple old folk house. It symbolizes Takehara's "academic atmosphere" and is a spot where you can slowly immerse yourself in historical depth in silence.
