Tomonoura in Fukuyama City is a port town with some of the best historical atmosphere in the Seto Inland Sea, having flourished as a port for waiting for tides since the Edo period. The Joyato lighthouse and old townscape remain almost completely intact, offering a scene like stepping back in time. Its beauty is known as the place where director Hayao Miyazaki conceived the film "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea," attracting domestic and international tourists. While gazing at islands floating in the sea, you can stroll through retro alleys or taste the specialty "Homeishu" (medicinal liquor), spending a peaceful time. It is a beautiful and calm sanctuary where old Japanese port town culture still breathes.
