Officially named "Kamo-wakeikazuchi Shrine," it is one of Kyoto's oldest shrines and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Beyond the vast lawn approach, you are welcomed by "Tatesuna" (sand cones) modeled after the sacred mountain where the deity descended. Famous as the stage for the "Aoi Matsuri" festival in May, traditions from the Heian period live on today. Listening to the murmuring of the "Nara-no-Ogawa" stream while enveloped in the sacred air of the ancient forest offers a special experience of Kyoto's spiritual roots.
