The World Heritage site Byodo-in in Uji City is globally famous for its "Phoenix Hall" depicted on the 10-yen coin. Built in the Heian period to image Buddhist paradise, its appearance reflecting in the Aji-ike Pond is elegantly magnificent, appearing as if from another world. The golden phoenixes shining on the roof, interior Buddhist statues, and beautiful murals concentrate the aesthetic essence of Heian nobles. At the on-site museum "Hoshokan," you can view authentic phoenix statues and Praying Bodhisattvas on Clouds up close, and be overwhelmed by their high artistry. It is a place to experience Japan's supreme Buddhist architecture and garden beauty with all five senses.
