Boasting a history of over 1,100 years, the Gion Matsuri is one of Japan's three major festivals and Kyoto's largest event held throughout the month of July. The highlight, the "Yamaboko Junko" parade, features Yamaboko floats known as "moving museums" decorated gorgeously as they parade through the streets with overwhelming impact. During the "Yoiyama" festivities leading up to the parade, the city is lit with lanterns, and you can enjoy street food to the sounds of traditional Gion-bayashi music. This festival, a culmination of Japanese tradition, craftsmanship, and citizen passion, is a precious opportunity to feel the soul of Kyoto, attracting travelers from all over the world.
