Kitano Tenmangu, enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, known as the "God of Learning," is the head shrine of all Tenmangu in Japan and a sacred site especially for examinees and students. About 1,500 plum trees loved by Michizane are planted in the grounds, spreading beautiful blossoms and scent in early spring. Every 25th, a festival market called "Tenjin-san" is held, where you can enjoy the atmosphere of a lively Japanese festival with antiques and stalls. The main hall, a National Treasure of magnificent Momoyama architecture, is also a highlight. It is a place where you can have a unique Japanese faith experience, such as praying for academic success and stroking the cute cow statue (Nade-ushi) for good luck.
