The Sankyo-son of the Tonami Plain is a unique settlement pattern where individual farmhouses are scattered across vast rice paddies. Each house is surrounded by a "Kainyo" (homestead forest) to protect it from winter winds and snow. In spring, when the fields are filled with water, the setting sun reflects off the surface, creating an artistic landscape that can only be seen here in Japan.
