Yudonosan Shrine, located in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, is considered the most sacred inner sanctum of the Three Mountains of Dewa. As one of Japan's foremost spiritual sites, it has long been shrouded in mystery, with a traditional commandment that one must not speak of or ask about what occurs within its mystical grounds. Uniquely, the shrine has no main building; instead, it enshrines a massive brownish-red rock from which hot spring water flows directly from the mountainside. By undergoing a ritual where visitors remove their shoes to purify themselves with sacred water and feel the earth's heartbeat directly against their skin, one can touch the essence of primitive nature worship and deep spirituality. It is a soul-stirring sanctuary where you can sharpen your senses and experience the pinnacle of Japanese spiritual culture, which reveres nature itself as a deity.
