Odate City in Akita Prefecture is known as the birthplace of the Akita Dog (Akita Inu). Akita Inu no Sato (Akita Dog Village), located in front of JR Odate Station, serves as both a tourist exchange center and a museum, where visitors can learn deeply about the charm of the Akita dog, which is a natural monument. Odate is also famous as the hometown of Hachiko the loyal dog, and a bronze statue of Hachiko can be found in front of the station. Nature attractions include the Nagashiri Fūketsu (Wind Caves), which are surrounded by beautiful forests of Akita cedar trees over 200 years old. Here, you can experience a unique natural phenomenon where cold air blows out even in the summer. Odate City is also famous as a production center for Magewappa (bentwood crafts), where you can view traditional crafts and purchase souvenirs. The local specialty, Kiritanpo (pounded rice skewers), is also famous, and you can savor the authentic local flavor.
