Sounkyo, within Daisetsuzan National Park, is one of Hokkaido's most spectacular gorges. Carved by the Ishikari River through lava plateaus of the Daisetsuzan massif, its vertical cliffs soar over 100 meters high and extend for some 24 kilometers, making it the largest gorge in Hokkaido.
