Shibetsu Town in the Nemuro Sub-prefecture of eastern Hokkaido is celebrated as the 'Holy Land of Salmon' — a small fishing village with over 10,000 years of continuous salmon fishing history dating back to the Jomon period, recognized as Japan Heritage. The Shibetsu Salmon Science Museum is the world's largest salmon exhibit facility, where visitors can observe a spectacular variety of salmonids including sturgeon, Chinook salmon, and king salmon in massive tanks; in autumn, cherry salmon can be seen ascending the stream right outside the museum. Shibetsu is also a member of 'The Most Beautiful Villages in Japan' association, set amid breathtaking natural scenery with panoramic views of the Notsuke Peninsula and Kunashiri Island. Fresh salmon seafood and pristine wilderness make this one of eastern Hokkaido's most authentic destinations.
