坐落在海拔约800米山顶之上的“高野山”，是1200年前由僧侣空海（弘法大师）开创的真言密教圣地。整座城镇是以“总本山金刚峯寺”为中心的巨大宗教都市，至今仍点缀着100多座寺院。最大的看点是相传空海至今仍在此禅定的“奥之院”，长达2公里的杉木林与数万座墓碑并排的参道上，飘荡着难以言表的神秘与庄严气息。许多寺院提供“宿坊”住宿，游客可以体验精进料理、抄经及早课勤行，在想要深度学习日本精神文化的海外游客中拥有极高的人气。
