The &#8220;Udatsu Townscape,&#8221; designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, features heavy merchant houses with &#8220;udatsu&#8221; firewalls\u2014symbols of wealth former merchants competed over\u2014giving the sensation of a time-slip to the Edo period. Throughout the city, spots showing cultural depth from ancient to modern times are scattered, including Japan&#8217;s oldest stone-piled tumulus and facilities designed by Tadao Ando. The beauty of the surrounding Tsurugi mountain range and the clear Anabuki River is also exceptional.
